i have to wipe of the dirty stink of the tree
but i tried it over 26 times and it still doens't work

First, you must send your (adult) villager over to the where the butterflies are congregating and the plant is waiting to goop up your villager. Once your villager is sticky-sweet, the butterflies flutter around him. The trick is, you need to veeery ... sloooowly ... drag your villager to the big tree. If you drag your villager too quickly, the butterflies stop following and return to the plant, and you have to start all over. Once your villager is at the big tree and has the butterflies with him, drop him directly on the tree, like in the middle rather than on an outstretched branch. He will automatically wipe the gunk off on it, and the butterflies will happily stay there.
